Habitat Energy, a leading global optimizer of battery storage and renewable energy assets using advanced AI powered algorithmic forecasting and trading, has been appointed by ACCIONA Energía to manage its 190MW/380MWh Cunningham battery in ERCOT.

Located in Hunt County, TX, ACCIONA Energía purchased the facility from Qcells in December 2022. The Cunningham project represents one of the largest battery energy storage systems in ERCOT. Habitat will begin operating the battery from June 2024 in time for the critical summer period when high demand and variable renewable generation have driven increased price volatility in recent years.

Battery optimization is a complex business and Habitat Energy has honed its skills in some of the world’s most advanced energy storage markets. We are incredibly proud of our performance in ERCOT and taking on Cunningham on behalf of ACCIONA Energía speaks to our results. We look forward to collaborating further as we expand our presence in the US and beyond.

Michael Kirschner, Managing Director USA, Habitat Energy

Habitat Energy has its US headquarters in Austin, Texas and offers battery owners a fully integrated end-to-end optimization service combining AI-driven forecasting and optimization across all wholesale and ancillary markets with Level 4 QSE services and human trader oversight.

Habitat’s US team has been operating batteries in ERCOT since July 2023 and is on course to be optimizing over 1.2GW of battery storage and renewable energy assets by the end of 2024. Globally, Habitat Energy now has over 2GW of battery storage and renewable energy assets under management across the US, UK and Australia.

ACCIONA Energía is a leading renewable energy firm with over 13.5GW of installed capacity  and a presence in 25 countries. In the US it has more than 3GW of wind and solar power operating or under construction, including 1.2GW of energy storage in development or operation.

The two companies are exploring further opportunities to expand their partnership in the US and overseas, across both battery storage and wind and solar.

Habitat Energy is a portfolio company of Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, a specialist investment manager focused exclusively on the infrastructure needed to drive the energy transition in the UK, US, and Australia.
