Habitat Energy, a leading global optimiser of battery storage and renewable energy assets, has partnered with global energy storage specialist, Eku Energy, to optimise its Basildon Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the United Kingdom (UK). Located in Essex, the 28MW/56MWh Basildon BESS is set to reach commercial operation in mid-2025.

Basildon BESS extends Eku Energy’s UK portfolio and lends further diversification of duration and location. Habitat Energy will provide battery optimisation services using a combination of AI-powered algorithmic forecasting and trading, human trader oversight and risk management, and real-world physical asset expertise.

Once live, the project will provide vital flexibility to support the UK electricity system, enable more renewable generation and advance the Government’s target to deliver a clean power system by 2030.

Meeting this goal will require a significant increase in battery storage capacity, from 4.7GW today to a range of 23-27GW, alongside other renewable energy sources and grid infrastructure improvements. Ensuring battery storage assets realise their full revenue potential is critical to driving the necessary investment in capacity over the next five years.

Habitat Energy’s fully integrated, end-to-end optimisation solution is purpose built to maximise the performance of battery storage assets. With over 3.3GW under management globally the company’s deep expertise ensures assets are smoothly onboarded, uptime is maximised, and the right risk-return balance is achieved across all markets and services.

We’re delighted Eku Energy have chosen Habitat Energy to optimise one of their first assets in the UK. A dynamic approach to trading and optimisation is critical to maximise asset performance and we look forward to working together to deliver the full revenue potential of Basildon BESS while building a strong, global partnership.

The agreement extends the relationship between the two companies, with Habitat Energy also appointed to optimise Eku Energy’s 250MW/500MWh Williamsdale BESS. Located in the ACT, Australia, Williamsdale is due to be operational in 2026 and forms part of the ACT Government’s Big Canberra Battery project.

We look forward to working with Habitat Energy to optimise both Williamsdale BESS and Basildon BESS and deliver on our long-term mission of accelerating the global energy transition.
